Dr. Laurie Clotilde is a food safety expert with over 15 years of experience in assay development for both the federal government (USDA-ARS and FDA) and biotechnology industry. She has held industry leadership positions and managed cross-functional teams in product development and commercialization. She is also the Founder and CEO of a California-based startup (BSure Technologies) that, in partnership with the USDA-ARS, is bringing food testing at the plate level. Laurie has authored many peer-reviewed research articles, spoken at numerous conferences, and is now serving as President for the California Association for Food Protection.
Tom Sidebottom recently joined the private sector as a regulatory consultant. He has over a 32 year federal career with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. At the FDA, he was the Director of the San Francisco Laboratory for 11 years. There Tom managed a diverse group of scientists responsible for protecting public health. Their core focus was to provide analytical expertise and problem-solving approaches to emerging public health issues in chemistry and microbiological testing. As laboratory director, he had responsibility to ensure the laboratory maintained compliance with federal and state environmental regulations in California. He also played a critical role in leading the design and construction of a new federal laboratory, which opened in September 2019.
Tom earned his B.S. degree in Entomology from the University of Maryland. He has extensive knowledge and experience with FD&C Act and regulatory compliance. Having spent over 30 years living in California, Tom is excited to join CalFP and support the establishment of the new IAFP affiliate.
Dr. Luxin Wang is an associate professor in food microbiology at the University of California Davis. Her research program focuses on the microbial safety of fresh produce, aquaculture products and animal products. Her program uses conventional microbiological technologies and new precision approaches, such as comparative genomics and metagenomics, to study the behavior of foodborne pathogens and their interactions with the background microbiome. She has been a member of the International Association for Food Protection for more than 12 years and is now serving as the secretary for the California Association for Food Protection.
Sherman is the Senior Technical Services Manager for Certified Laboratories. A food quality/safety professional with over 25 years of experience working in food plant quality management and food laboratory testing operations, he brings a broad set of skills and experience that include but not limited to Food Science, Plant GMPs, Quality Assurance/Quality Systems, FDA Imports and all aspects of Laboratory Operations. He prides himself in bridging science with practicality and provides a hands on plant personnel friendly approach to food quality, food safety, and process validation. Sherman is also an Almond Board of California Approved Process Authority and has served as the Treasurer of the Southern CA Association for Protection (SCAFP) and is now serving as the Treasurer for the California Association for Food Protection.
David has over 25 years solving technical concerns and creating business-based answers for companies related to Microbiology, Environmental Monitoring and Contamination Control. He is a Microbiologist/Consultant using his experience and vast network developing solutions for clients. His expertise goes beyond the Food industry into Pharmaceutical manufacturing, Clinical Microbiology and Pharmacies. With that diversity, he brings interdisciplinary best practices to clients. David has authored for the Parenteral Drug Association, spoken at numerous conferences, and served as President for the Northern California Association of the American Society for Microbiology. He is Delegate for the California Association for Food Protection.
